The Chinook Justice Campaign

We seek access, answers and accountability: access to all the key documents, answers about our loved ones’ deaths, and accountability for the circumstances surrounding the crash.

On 2 June 1994, an RAF Chinook helicopter - ZD 576 - crashed on a remote hillside on the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland.

All 29 people on board died, including some of the UK’s most senior intelligence experts and four Special Forces crew.

But many questions remain unanswered, which is why the #ChinookJustice Campaign was formed in 2024.

Most of the families affected by the crash are involved. We demand a public inquiry to establish the truth and the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

We want the UK Government and Ministry of Defence to unlock the papers which have been sealed for 100 years. Why have they been sealed for such a long time? What is there to hide? Who is being protected? It’s long past time for answers.

The Chinook Justice Campaign is dedicated to the memory of the passengers and crew of ZD576

Why did they die?

“I was only a child when my father died in June 1994. In the 31 years since, there have been subsequent inquiries that have not fully answered our concerns around what happened on that night and why, which have led to many unanswered questions.

“It is shocking that key papers have been sealed until 2094, when all bereaved family members are unlikely to still be alive to see them. The Chinook Justice Campaign has been formed so that the families can work together to secure answers we have been awaiting for three decades.”

Matt Tobias, who was 10 years old when his father, Lieutenant Colonel John Tobias MBE, was killed in the crash.

The BBC’s 2024 2-part documentary ‘Chinook: Zulu Delta 576’ was how the families - and the public - discovered that the MoD had locked away the files on the crash for 100 years. You can watch both episodes below:
